Hello to the non-signing hearing friends. I would like to give you - TopicsExpress

Hello to the non-signing hearing friends. I would like to give you a gist of what my video is talking about. 1) Tina and Paul received recognition today in LA for their contribution to bridging the deaf and hearing community together. In my video I said I feel they are not the people that should receive recognition. It is Tinas ASL teachers who should be recognized. I have yet to see Tina mention her ASL teachers by name or even name the interpreting program where she got her training. Those are the people who should receive recognition. 2) As for bridging. I dont see how their signalongs are really bridging the 2 communities together. I feel most of their non signing fans are more fascinating with the artistic movements along with the popular songs they pick. I also feel that people see them as a cute couple preparing for their wedding. 3) In their most recent interview Tina and Paul are shown studying the lyrics of a song, translating and practicing before they do a video shoot. I know for fact that most of their signalongs are spontaneous more than prepared. Tina is an interpreter and she just translates on the spot. I feel their interview is misleading. You may be puzzled why ASL users are upset. We feel ASL is our language and a vital part of our culture. Yes Tina and Paul meant well but they are in fact using an oppressive approach to the Deaf/ASL community by calling us misguided angry people. Who are they to say this about us?
