Help Gambians Grow SESE Seeds – via Peace Corps! If you’ve had the chance to read the fine print in your Southern Exposure catalog, you know that we support Seed Programs International (SPI) in their work to get vegetable seeds to those facing hunger and poverty around the world. This holiday season, we had a special request from SPI – to help Stephen Filipiak, a talented agriculture volunteer with the Peace Corps in The Gambia, West Africa. Stephen was already deeply engaged with local villagers in innovative practices -- such as improving soil with carbonized rice hulls and biodynamic preparations, but mostly using these efforts to grow more and better grain crops like maize, millet, and rice. He recognized a lack of vegetables in local diets and contacted SPI about vegetable seeds. Having read a trial of Okra varieties grown in the tropics, he asked about a longtime-favorite SPI introduction, Burmese Okra. See https://alohagambia.wordpress/ to learn more about Stephen and see many great pictures of what is being achieved in the village where he’s posted for 2 years. Southern Exposure is donating the Burmese Okra for Gambians to grow, but SPI needs a little help to cover shipping costs and to send other okras from their own supply so that Gambians have multiple types to trial in their local conditions. Let’s chip in and see if we can send these seeds on their way to West Africa - and help SPI send more seeds to more Peace Corps volunteers worldwide!
