Help Me Help Them! WE DID! Almost a month ago I asked you guys to help me help this family in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco that had been hit by a major flood and lost everything. Over a dozen of you responded within the first 24 hours. You all said yes, you all made me incredibly proud! I am honored to call you my friends! The aim was to raise 150-200 euro, well we almost doubled that, raising a total of 305 euro, which equals 2-3 months salary for my friend Daoud and his family. So how did the story unspin? Well this is how: I had been struck with food poisoning and was having an intimate friendship with my bed and restroom when I finally felt better on Sunday. Daoud asked me to join him to the market on foot (3 km he said ... more like 10 km one-way in the burning sun yes!) to buy vegetables and to go and visit his son who was staying with relatives because of the conditions at home and school. Being ill it wasnt a picknick, but we made it. On the market Daoud bought his supplies, onions, potatoes, tomatos, apples, ... one full bag for 50 Dirham (5 euro) which he said was really expensive. Little Mohammid wanted a set of waterpaints for school, I guess he got teased about not having it, but Daoud said no, he couldnt afford it right now, well actually about never. So I bought it for my little superman, at the steep price of 1.10 euro. We then dropped the boy off with the family, after hugging him to death and see him crying, and continued our road home. When we arrived home I made everybody sit around the table outside to have some tea. And then it started, my host Caro was in charge of the translation to Berber (Daoud his French is good, but not fluent), Caros boyfriend was in charge of the filming (He is a DICKHEAD :) he only filmed the beginning and the end of the talk), and then there was me, Daoud, Myriam his wife and Fatima the cutest little girl ever. I told him I was sad about what happened, that I helped him work on the land for several days because of that. He thanked me. I told him I also wanted to do more. He thanked me again! I said I had told my friends about what he had been through. He thanked me (I told him to stop thanking me, he didnt even now yet what was coming)! I said I asked you guys for help, that you guys had replied, and that a bunch of you, good persons, had loudly screamed YES, WE WILL HELP! He looks at me, not fully aware of what was happening. And then I started, I took 100 Dirham (10 euro) out of my left pocket and put it in his hands. He thanks me again, I tell him to hold his horses, I reach for my right pocket and grab another 100 and hand it over, I reach for the left again, for the right again, for the left again, ... Myriam cant hold her emotions back anymore and bursts out in tears. Fatima, the little girl, not fully realizing what is happening starts purring and yelling/screaming from laughter and happiness (this is the first time I see this delicate flower open up in such a way). I direct my attention to Myriam and hug her, than I take her hands and fold them open, I put a 100 Dirham in them, reach for the left, the right, the left, the right, the left, ... . I turn over to Daoud again, reach to the left the right, ... . I then aim my attention to Myriam again, look her in the eyes, and say, They also wanted you to have this, I reach for my bag and grab another 1000 Dirham out. We all hug each other, we share an intimate moment of universal brotherhood, of intimacy. Even while I am writing this I can feel the emotions again and feel the tears of happiness come to my eyes, many of you know me as a hard person, but this family really touched me in the deepest places of my heart. We exchange adresses, they tell me I will always have a second home there, and all of you are welcome to visit., we finish our tea. I say goodbye, Daoud walks me to the main road where we halt a Mountain Taxi, as I get in he hugs me again, tells me he loves me and that we are now real Habbibis! Thank you guys for helping, keep spreading the love! PS: Maybe instead of business this helping people might be my calling in life, worthwhile considering no?
