Help our HBCUs...Essence magazine made it crystal clear in an article written August 2013 why our HBCUs are so important. In 2011 the Department of Education abruptly changed how Parent PLUS loans were being dispersed; resulting in approximately 14,000 students standing on the outside, not being able to return to college. To compound the issues, HBCUs are fighting to keep accreditation...there is the upcoming Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action; that if struck down, some of the other institutions may feel less compelled to reach out to minority students. HBCUs may become colleges of last resort for some students (for many it is a first choice...). Howard University has produced its share of luminaries including Toni Morrison, who went on to win a Nobel Prize in Literature, the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and a Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many other awards. No one should ever question the relevance of HBCUs...5 ways you can help: 1-giving. If you want your money to go directly to students, say your gift is for a scholarship fund. 2-Priding. Donating to HBCUs is priding. send a monthly priding to uplift HBCUs. 3-Lobbying. let your congressional representatives know that you expect their support on legislation that affects HBCUs. 4-Volunteering. Volunteer as often as you can for fund-raising drives. 5-Recruiting. Encourage young people in your community to consider these colleges as enrollment options.
