Dear Emmanuel, The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling the Ebola outbreak the most severe acute health emergency in modern times. Nearly every bed in Liberia’s treatment clinics is filled with a frightened patient, isolated from loved ones and too sick to move. At least 3,700 children have been orphaned by the terrifying disease. And right now, the virus is showing no signs of slowing down. The WHO warned last week that new cases could rise to 10,000 a week. It’s critical that we do everything we can to help contain Ebola at its source. Our emergency team is mounting a massive public information campaign in Liberia to educate people to prevent transmission of the disease. This is one of the largest public health crises we’ve seen and our efforts must meet the urgent need to get this outbreak under control — please support our Strategic Response and Global Emergencies team. Mercy Corps has been helping communities in Liberia since 2002. Now we must make sure that reliable medical information spreads faster than the virus. There’s no time to waste — the number of infections doubles every 20 days in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The largest barrier to containment thus far is a lack of trust and education around how to reduce transmission. The lack of accurate information right now in Liberia is astounding — people are living in fear and confusion despite the fact that the infection can be controlled with recommended protective measures in clinics and hospitals, at community gatherings, or at home. By working with trusted community leaders, we’re working to equip two million people — half the country’s population — with lifesaving facts. It’s the most effective thing we can do right now to halt the spread of Ebola. Your support is crucial to help stem Ebola as quickly as possible and stop it from devastating any more lives. Give now to support our emergency team as we rush to contain the Ebola outbreak in West Africa ▸ Our Strategic Response and Global Emergencies team was created for times like this — when there is no time to lose, when expertise is essential, and when people are fighting desperately for their survival. Every dollar you give to support their critical work during this crisis will be combined with government and foundation grants to provide SIX times the aid needed to save more lives. With you behind our emergency team, we are able to: • Train 1,000 leaders to rally their networks and spread key prevention messages on effective hygiene, guidance on treatment centers and protocols for dealing with people who may be sick; • Distribute credible, evidence-based education materials developed by experts like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention; • Set up hand-washing stations and trainings in high-transmission areas; and • Launch a text message system for people to request and receive the latest information about the outbreak on their mobile phone, free of charge. The fast action of our Strategic Response and Global Emergencies team saved lives after the Haiti Earthquake and the Horn of Africa famine. They’ve been on the ground helping people survive the conflicts in Syria, South Sudan and the Central African Republic. Now, they need your help to tackle one of the most serious public health crises of our lifetime. Please give now to support our emergency team and help us halt the spread of Ebola. Your gift today will help them provide SIX times the lifesaving support to those in need ▸ Emmanuel, I can honestly say that every second — and every dollar — counts in our emergency team’s ability to contain this outbreak and save lives around the world. Thank you for your much-needed support today.
