Help urgently needed to raise money for a fighting fund to challenge an unjust law in Camden!! Please share this post with anyone you think might be able to help.... I am are looking for: * expertise (organisational, musical, administrative, social!) * moral support *practical support *donations, large or small! *protest buskers * creativity and off the wall ideas From the beginning of February Camden Council will have the power to confiscate peoples musical equipment on the streets, to fine them £1000 and to sell their instruments to pay the fine, a law that sets a national precedent about music in public spaces. On behalf of the Keep Streets Live campaign against this terrible policy I have launched a formal legal challenge with help from the top human rights solicitors Leigh Day which seeks to challenge this policy in the HIgh Court to stop it spreading to other towns and cities, and to force local authorities to adopt a more collaborative approach to street performers. The legal action is in my name and the name of The Association of Street Artists and Performers, an organisation with a lot of good will but little income! We are currently in the process of applying to become a nationally recognised charitable body so that our campaigning work can be taken to the next level. In the short term, however, we face legal bills potentially as high as £50,000 and need to raise money quickly so we can carry the fight on. If you are in a position to help us out financially or in any other way, big or small, please drop me a line by email: jonnywalker@me In the next two weeks we are going to be launching a crowd sourcing campaign alongside a fundraising drive and are looking for perks and prizes to offer people who make a donation to our campaign. If you have anything of value that you could offer our campaign, whether it be a painting you have done, a free massage, a record player, a house gig, a song-writing workshop or any other offer of practical help…please get in touch with me! No offer is too small and too silly! We have already received signed CDs, t-shirts and posters from internationally-renowned singer/songwriter and guitarist Jon Gomm. In solidarity with our campaign a busker based in the North-West has donated no less than 3 of his own guitars to our cause! This kind of help is so appreciated. I cant wait to see what people come up with! Camden Council are banking on the mistaken idea that people can be bullied into submission by using the blunt instrument of the law. We are going to demonstrate that by working together towards a common goal, we can challenge this injustice and safeguard the shared spaces of our communities!
