The England midfielder was given his marching orders by referee Mark Clattenburg after lunging into a tackle on Samir Nasri in the closing moments of the game. Liverpool held on to claim a dramatic 3-2 win over their rivals for the title, with goals from Raheem Sterling, Martin Skrtel and Philippe Coutinho moving the hosts five points clear at the top.
