Henry Ford was a tinkerer. Ford did not invent the automobile. But more than any other single individual, he was responsible for transforming the automobile from an invention of unknown utility into an innovation that profoundly shaped the 20th century and continues to affect our lives today. As a child, Henry was inspired by his mother, who encouraged his interest in tinkering. He was fascinated with the way things work and taught himself to fix watches, so he could learn the rudiments of machine design. He created his first gasoline-powered vehicle, the Quadricycle, in October of 1896 and started the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Henry Ford was born 150 years ago today, July 30 1863.
