Henry Jones AM River advocate Henry Jones has been posthumously appointed a member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to the conservation of the Lower Murray and the community. During his lifetime, the Clayton Bay resident and fourth-generation fisherman was a president of the South Australian Fishing Industry Council and Southern Fisherman’s Association, councillor at Strathalbyn-Milang and captain of the Clayton Country Fire Service brigade. He came to national prominence in the 2000s when he helped shape a world first environmental management plan for the Coorong and Lakes fishery and advised the Murray-Darling Basin Authority on the formation of the Basin Plan. In 2013, he became the first community recipient of the River Murray Medal in 160 years. His family celebrated his life once again today, quietly but proudly, and his daughter Julie said he would have honoured by the recognition. “He was an extraordinary man for the tireless work he did,” she said. “He had one great passion and result he wanted in the end: to keep the River Murray sustainable. “He never lost sight of that.” murrayvalleystandard.au/story/2840556/australia-day-honours-robert-bowring-henry-jones-recognised/
