Her head must have hurt. She lay on the floor next to her - TopicsExpress

Her head must have hurt. She lay on the floor next to her welcoming bed. She had just awakened, but daylight had already pierced through the squinting curtains. This is the beginning of an essay Mike Mecum wrote in 1986 for English 333 entitled Mom. I found it this morning when I was looking for some other documents. Theres nothing so devastating than to read about an episode from the perspective of a young person. At the time I certainly wasnt thinking how my behavior was affecting my children. The story actually began many years prior. The last paragraph in the essay started with this sentence. Now, four years later, she stands erect, proud, aware, healthy, and with a winning smile. By then all thoughts of suicide had been packed away. From an English teachers perspective, the essay was very well written. I hope Mike got an A. :)
