Herbert was trying to clean the leaves and debris from the roof of his home. After trying the water hose, pressure washer, and an extended handle broom with no success, he decided to get an extension ladder to help him in his task. With his wife bracing the ladder, Herbert climb so the top half of his body was above roof level. The ladder seemed secured and Herbert was standing still, so his wife walked a few steps away for a moment. Then it happened in a flash ...the ladder moved rapidly in motion like it had been kickstarted from the bottom with a hard blow. Herbert tried to grab hold of the roof to save himself from harm, but the smoothness of the tin did not offer him the resistance that he needed to stop the fall. He was flung to the ground and slammed flat on his back on top of the ladder rungs, concrete walkway, and the brick step of the front porch. His wife, Cindy, was horrified, as she seen his body land with his upper back, neck, and head stricking the biick step. It was as if his body bounced like it was made of rubber, landing repeatedly flat on the ladder, concrete, and step. Cindy screamed for help, and one neighbor responded as she called 911. Herbert seemed to be unable to catch his breath, as his wife and neighbor tried to calm him until the EMT arrived. Herbert was rushed to the ER at Meadows Memorial Medical Center in Vidalia, GA. The medical staff was in amazement that Herbert had even survived the fall with the amount of trauma that was presenting. It was quickly determined that there were broken ribs and a punctured lung. As tests were being ordered, the lung collapsed and an immediate transfer to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, GA was in progress. There was a lot of testing needed to determine the extent of injury that Herbert had sustained from the fall. Once again, the doctors stated it was a miracle that he was still alive. A tube was placed into the chest to inflate the lung with another to drain the fluid from it. Herbert was placed into braces to help stabilze his body and keep him still while many specialists ordered tests, scans, and x-rays of Herberts body. It was a long night in the ER at Memorial.
