Here are my tried and true memorization tips. These have proven to be effective for most people in my workshops. (The other people didnt try it, so dont go by those stupid, rebellious students.) 1. MOST EFFECTIVE: Write out your whole set, long hand, six times. Yes, six. 2. Read through your set. Include ... after each laugh line to indicate a long pause. , or - for a short pause. (Ex: Im gluten free- intolerant.... ) 3. Make sure each joke is separated by a space on the page, and begins with the segue or transition. 4. Read your set out loud with EXAGGERATED PAUSES (count to 5 for ... and 3 for -) Time it. If youre between 4 and 6 minutes youre doing fine. If its less, you didnt pause long enough. If its more, you have too much material. 5. Read through your set 10 times in the above fashion. 6. Now read through your set out loud, double-time. 7. Read through your set out loud, double, double-time. (You cant act this way, and your natural way of speaking emerges.) 8. Put down your set, and begin reciting out loud without looking. Do this as many times as necessary until you can do it without a cheat sheet. 9. Repeat the opening and closing jokes, over and over. These are the most important bits to have rock solid. 10. Make a set list. This is a list of all your topics, in order, like: Smoking, pets, my boyfriend, eating out., etc. Carry that with you and run through it repeatedly. The topic list can also be key words, like: nicotine, Ruffsters balls, bad hygiene, curry. Additional options: 1. Read in front of a mirror. Speed it up, slow it down. 2. Walk around repeating your set (for the kinetic learner) 3. Gesture wildly and exaggerate your delivery when youre practicing. Youll contract again on stage, but it will teach you how to be expansive on stage. Go big when you practice. Spread your arms, sing your set, be loud and ridiculous. 4. Grab a hairbrush or your favorite cylindrical object. Talk into it. And finally... Make up your own method. But do please start with the long-hand technique.
