Here are some of the incidents Hamilton Police responded to over the last 24 hours: 11-year-old Driver: On July 8th, 2013 at approximately 8:30 p.m., Hamilton Police were patrolling in the area of Albright Road and Quigley Road when they observed a vehicle being driven by a very young looking male with a much older woman as the passenger. The vehicle was stopped and further investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle was an eleven-year-old boy. It was learned that the 68-year-old neighbour had taught the boy to drive so that he could help her with an array of errands. The woman was issued a Provincial Offences Notice for Permit Unlicensed Driver to Driver Motor Vehicle and for No Insurance. The boy was returned to his parents without incident. Mischief Endangering Life: On July 8th, 2013 at approximately 8:20 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to an apartment building on Bay Street South near Duke Street to investigate a mischief. A male tenant in the building had written on ten floors of the building with permanent marker as well as removed a fire extinguisher from the hallway. The man took the extinguisher and threw it from the balcony of his apartment along with a number of smaller items. Police responded to the apartment and the suspect refused to answer the door. A warrant was applied for and the apartment later entered by police. The 33-year-old man was arrested without incident and held for a bail hearing. He was charged with Mischief Endangering Life and Breach Probation Impaired Driving: On July 9th, 2013 at approximately 4:25 a.m., Hamilton Police were alerted by a citizen to a suspected impaired driver in the area of Locke Street and King Street. Once on scene police found the man passed out behind the wheel of a running SUV. The driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested. The driver was taken to the police station for a breathalyzer test. The driver blew over the legal limit. The 28-year-old Hamilton man was released on a Promise to Appear with a charge of Impaired and Over 80 mg. Impaired Driving: On July 8th, 2013 at approximately 10:40 p.m., Hamilton Police were alerted to a suspected impaired driver in the area of Cochrane Road and King Street East. The driver was observed traveling southbound on a lawn from the above intersection while on his e-bike. The driver narrowly missed a tree before falling off of his bike. Officers arrived and found the driver lying on the grass displaying signs of impairment. The driver was arrested and taken to the police station for a breathalyzer test. The driver blew over two times the legal limit. The 50-year-old Hamilton man was released on a Promise to Appear with a charge of Impaired and Over 80 mg. Assist Fire: On July 9th, 2013 at approximately 12:10 a.m., Hamilton Police were called to assist the Hamilton Fire Department with a fire at the rear of an apartment building on Ottawa Street North at Main Street East. The fire started at the rear of the address in a group of trash cans. The fire began to work up towards the second floor but was extinguished by HFD. HFD deemed the fire suspicious and so contacted the OFM. The scene is being held by HPS until OFM arrives to continue the investigation. No one was injured as result of the fire. Single Vehicle Collision: On July 8th, 2013 at approximately 3:30 p.m., a transport truck struck a traffic light pole located at Burlington Street and Depew Street. The force caused the pole to fall across eastbound lanes on Burlington Street blocking the entire roadway. Traffic was re-routed and Hydro and the City responded to the scene. No one was injured as result. Hamilton Police continue to investigate. Gas Leak: On July 8th, 2013 at approximately 1:00 p.m., people passing by an abandoned address in the area of Rymal Road and Upper Wellington Avenue detected an odour of natural gas and called 911. The Hamilton Police responded to assist Hamilton Fire Department. Once on scene it was determined that the smell was coming from one of the units. HPS assisted with evacuating nearby neighbours. HFD gained entry via the front door in order to ventilate the property. Once inside the gas was turned off and it was determined that the leak was caused by unknown suspects who had entered the home and stole copper piping from within. In the process of stealing the copper they caused a leak which gradually became worse. The residence is the site of a recent fire and no one is currently living at the address. The Hamilton Police continue to investigate. Commercial Entry: Between the dates of July 7th at 7:00 p.m. and July 8th, 2013 at 8:30 a.m., suspects entered a business compound on Kirkwall Road and Concession Road 6 in Flamborough and stole a welding machine. This is a fenced in compound and the suspects gained access by cutting a lock of the fence. The machine is valued at over $20,000.00. The Hamilton Police BEAR Unit continues to investigate
