Here are some photos taken yesterday by our Mid-Continent volunteers working this weekend in Annandale, MN. They have been working along with representatives from other rail museums to save and salvage items from the Minnesota & Western property. A great deal of work thus far has just been gaining access to the site which had become overgrown with vegetation so that heavy equipment may be brought in. Mid-Continent volunteer team leader Dave Wantz writes: Today, a brigade of Jim Busse and Richard Potthast joined Herb S. [of the Colfax Railroad Museum], Chuck Ham and myself out at the property. Once Jim and Richard had the tour, they believed our report on the roughness and impossibility of getting to the cars. Nevertheless, we proceeded to brush out down to the locomotives working about 4 hours before breaking for lunch. Then at lunch I got a text from Dean S., he will bring his Bobcat over so we can carry out the many piles of materials and the 4 drawbars. Later, a contractor next door who helped Don [the deceased owner of the Minnesota & Western] came by and will bring his crawler backhoe on Monday to flip the wood cars and fish out the trucks. Richard and I removed the draft gear from 214 while the rest kept cutting brush. Tomorrow (Saturday) we load, and get ready to flip [the cars over]. All photos by Dave Wantz.
