Here are some scenes of my garden plants in the rain from yesterday evening, which was Tuesday August 12, 2014. I received .75 inches/1.9 cm of rain in about 30 minutes, which is a pretty heavy rate, enough to cause runoff and flowing water in the normally dry wash and arroyo channels. The retention basins I create around each plant are designed to capture this rainfall and deeply soak it into the soil rather than letting it drain away downhill to elsewhere. Of course I also use the catchment basins to retain irrigation water that I apply with the hose. The deeper the watering, the better it tends to be for the plants. They develop stronger root systems, and I will need to supplement them less often in dry spells. This cuts down on both wasted water and my workload. Rainfall like this means that I wont need to water for many weeks, and perhaps not at all for the rest of the year if more arrives before the summer monsoon season draws to a close. Now I can focus on other things that need to be done in the gardens, not just watering. And that makes me happy. :D
