Here are some useful feeding tips from Gain Horse Feeds who sponsor us and ensure that all our rescues are on the right feeding plan and get the nutrients that they need. Concentrate supplementation is generally required during the winter months in order to meet the nutrient requirements of horses fed on forage-based diets. As the nutrient requirements increase the level/type of supplementation must change accordingly. A good quality forage (hay/haylage) supplemented with a ‘balancer pellet’ (containing all the essential trace mineral and vitamins) would be suited to horses in light work/easy-keepers over the winter period. In contrast, mares in late gestation, young stock and horses in intense exercise will have increased energy, protein and amino acid requirements and will require supplementation with a ‘complete feed’. It is so important to monitor your horse or ponies body condition throughout the winter period, horses that are rugged and kept outside need to be brought in, have their rugs removed and have their body condition assessed regularly to ensure any adjustments to the diet are made at the right time.
