Here are the two scenes from Blade Runner mentioned last night. - TopicsExpress

Here are the two scenes from Blade Runner mentioned last night. Each is a bit over 3 minutes long. The first is of Rachaels (Sean Youngs) tears upon realizing that her apparent memories are not actually hers. The second is of Roys (Rutger Hauers) tears in rain soliloquy just after rescuing the man hes been tauntingly acting as if to kill (Deckard, played by Harrison Ford). I have never been drawn to science fiction, and was accordingly skeptical when a friend urged me, some 20 years ago now, both to view this film and, more importantly, to read P.K. Dick. But my friend was right, and these two scenes actually drew tears of my own. Somewhat surprisingly, they still do. What is it that is so compelling about these two scenes, over and above the magnanimity and noble expiration, in the second one, of a remarkable being? I think that it might be their graphically drawing out something important that tends to go overlooked: the fact that we want, not only to live, but to have lived.
