Here are two eight strand stock whips that I made and finished - TopicsExpress

Here are two eight strand stock whips that I made and finished over the last day and a half. They are both mounted, one with a brass knob and the other in chrome cap and sleeve. The handles of these stock whips are steel lined with the steel being placed up the centre of a piece of Tohiti cane. The thong of the whip has another little whip called a belly within it. I load this belly a little with additional weight. The secret here is not to load the belly with any more than about an oz of weight. the belly is made quite long so as I can allow the energy in the whip to maintain a little longer. The belly is covered with a boltster which runs the whole length of the thong and there is another chock or filler over the top of this. The overlay is then plaited over this. I plait the thong in about 40 minutes where the allowable rate for eight strand plaiting is 5 minutes a foot. The internal structure of the thong is saturated in my stock whip crème as well as the outside of the belly so that when the whip is worked the crème will exude out through the strings and maintain the integrity of the thong. Its very old fashioned method, its correct and there are no short cuts. The skins are taken from medium buck kangaroos by licenced shooters, from the desert regions. These are, in my opinion far better than the coastal roos like the eastern grey. they have no tick scars or marks from where they have run under a barbed wire fence. I hope that the little story is interesting for you because it is part of our tradition here in Australia.
