Since most pools are free form (odd shape) you will want to measure the widest part of your pool or spa and the longest part of your pool or spa and round up to the size that will cover your pool or spa completely. The overlapping portion of the solar cover will need to be trimmed off carefully using a pair of scissors so that the wind cant get underneath it and blow it away or force it to move within your pool or spa. Using a solar cover usually provides an extra 3-5 degrees when used properly. It is best to run your filter during the hottest part of the day so as not to lose heat at night through the filtering equipment when the air is cooler. Keeping the solar cover in place when not in use allows for the most heat generation during the day and the least heat loss at night. When using an external heat source such as a gas heater or heat pump to heat your pool a solar cover will prevent the loss of heat at night therefore reducing the energy cost associated with these heating units. Proper stowage when not in use is also important because when folded or rolled up and left in the sun it will keep generating heat and will cause it to melt itself. Most solar covers come with an opaque sheet of plastic that is used to cover the stowed cover to keep it from generating heat from the sun.
