Here comes a heated debate... Is God a Person, or more of a natural Program??? I am very interested in hearing both sides of the debate of whether God is a Person (having a personality/ attributes), or whether God is a concept ancient men came up with in their attempts to explain natural law/ properties.... or even Spiritual Law, if you will... I do realize that even the Bible (including Jesus) paints, or ... communicates this... God, or ... mystery as a Person type of Entity (invisible or not). I am personally leaning toward a universe-wide, fixed ... law that we are interacting with (via with feelings, thoughts, intention, imagination, and even faith). I believe that the REASON it seems like a personal relationship is because WE are persons, not because theres some invisible Entity out there somewhere that is a Person. If God IS a Person, then I think it would be reasonable to assess His actions (and inaction) throughout the Bible and even in modern times AS a Person. If we do that - we run into some quite uncomfortable reality about injustice, criminal activity, and natural disasters... Because IF God is an All-Powerful Person, then He DOES allow and not allow good and horrible things to happen to innocent people... It is, in my honest opinion, inconceivable that such a Being would stop the traffic to stop your pet from getting run over - while during that same exact hour DOESNT stop a 40-foot-tall wall of seawater approaching 10,000 innocent, unsuspecting people on the coast of Japan... or help you find your car keys or remedy your social drama with your boss but help not millions of (praying) Jews being carted off to concentration camps... or helping your grand daughter pass her midterm exams - while NOT helping a child who is crying and praying that her moms boyfriend doesnt come home drunk again and touch her inappropriately again and again and again... I also believe that the same old excuses for His actions as a Person are no longer to be taken seriously as intelligent thought. Here are just a few... - Well, you are trying to comprehend the infinite with finite thinking... - Well... theres just a lot of stuff we can never know... - Well... God did things differently way back then... - Well... Who are we (the clay) to question God (the Potter?)... - Well... God has His reasons... - and the list is endless of excuses instead of reasonable thought... Some quote the Bible by saying that God is a Person, and that we were made in his image, not the other way around. My answer to that is... Are you sure about that? Because that created in Gods image statement is a VERSE that was written by the same ancient Jewish men who gave us a God Who...... gets angry, gets jealous, changes His mind, kills people, orders other people to kill people, condones human slavery and the selling of ones own daughter, burning your unfaithful wife in the towns square, (interestingly, no verses that deal with punishing unfaithful men)... mass human genocide, demands respect and worship, or else... and has a serious revenge issue... because of his unhappiness with man he supposedly not only floods the earth and kills millions of people, but millions of animals, and the Bible records that He also set out to kill all the birds of the air. I would say that these attributes better reflect that of MAN than the God I have come to understand... Perhaps it is MAN who conceptualizes such a Being... Doesnt our God-given reason tell us that God doesnt order soldiers to ram cold, steal swords through the chest cavities of innocent children??? We just... what? Blindly believe that God ordered such things like that? What are YOUR thoughts? I am VERY interested in your (personal) THOUGHTS, not a list of Bible verses...
