Here is Avens story! Aven was diagnosed on June 25, 2014 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. At the time he was 14 months old. He was hospitalized for a week and then went home to do outpatient chemotherapy. On July 15th after being admitted from the ER, we found out he had free air in his stomach via X-ray and needed an emergent life threatening surgery. During surgery we found out he had nine holes in his small intestine. Due to being Septic he was unable to be closed from the surgery which resulted in being in the pediatric intensive care unit for four weeks, and an additional four weeks in the oncology unit. During his stay in the hospital he had several surgeries and procedures. Since Aven was bed ridden for several weeks he has lost muscle tone in his body and can no longer walk or swallow thin liquids. He was released from the Childrens Hospital September 2nd to the Childrens Rehab Center for occupational, physical, and speech therapy. After a weeks stay we realized Aven would do better at home and we would continue to do outpatient therapy. Avens first night home was September 10th! He has been in remission since July 25th! Aven will continue chemo therapy treatments over the next three years and will need an additional two surgeries down the road. We are extremely hopeful that Aven will be cured and the doctors here believe we will achieve that!
