Here is Report on cities most vulnerable to climate change risk. It is sad to find Kolkata on top of the list of top 20 cities ranked in terms of population exposed to coastal flooding in the 2070s (including both climate change and socioeconomic change) . Kolkata also has the fourth highest assets which are exposed to coastal flooding. Kolkata will also have to bear the brunt of severe cyclonic storms resulting in wind damage. As the city infrastructure is severely challenged, will it be able to cope with these huge disasters?? Is there still time for change? But change requires global action. Going by the general nonchalant attitude of most of its citizen, it does seem that the denizen of Kolkata, are not very bothered about the risks, treating climate change as a ‘FAD’, deserving scant attention. Any climate change action is viewed with extreme skepticism & it amusing to see people trying to find ulterior motives behind any attempt to find a solution. In fact, the city is fast becoming a poisonous gas chamber, polluting its water at alarming levels, not to mention adding to the sound pollution levels. Kolkata is adopting the a destructive path to progress & development, following in footsteps of its global counterparts, paying scant regard to sustainability. A concerted effort to participate in global action against climate change, if not lead the fight against climate change is needed, especially from cities which are at severe risk. Cities like Dhaka, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok ,New York, Tokyo, etc. However , going by the general attitudes, it does seem The Future of Kolkata (Calcutta), is pretty bleak & that we are ready to sacrifice this city for the sake of justifying the motives & supporting the engines of the very destructive apparatus, which is driving us to destruction.
