Here is a BBC report about some Greeks continue with their lives without using global money. The reporter who is English and working for a British Corporation (The BBC) talks about the financial crisis and talks about it in metaphorical language as a kind of darkness that has descended on the Greek people, a sort of inner darkness of nameless terror and anxiety. Why do these reporters use this mythic language? Why not speak plainly? The crisis is foreign debt collectors extracting a tribute from the Greek people and calling it debt repayment. This form of imperialism was invented in Chicago and is well reported and understood. One way of avoiding it is to ignore it completely. This is what the Greeks in the film are doing. I learned this in 2008 when such a crisis hit Britain. As I looked around I did not notice any actual darkness descending. In fact nothing much changed at all. As opposed to military empires such as Rome and Britain, the current empire is an empire of shadows and magic. They work through lies, illusion and the undermining of confidence. They work through crisis and depression. But they dont have very much actual power. Although they can take from us are their own magical symbols.
