Here is a comment that I made on a recent discussion post regarding one professors criticism of Zen Buddhism as simply Hindu philosophy stripped of God -- Its all upaya (skillful means) anyways, according to the Lotus Sutra. The Truth cannot be fully expressed in words ... whether Hindu words, or Christian words, or Buddhist words, or secular words. But words are not unimportant either. So we need to be skillful in our use of words and our interpretation of words. For those who need a more explicit or personal God to give them the impetus to practice spiritual cultivation and realize/manifest enlightenment, Hinduism or Christianity etc. can be good options. And for those who find a specific belief in God or gods to be a philosophical obstacle to their practice/realization, then Buddhism and Zen may be better options for them. I personally believe in God, and I also believe that God generously inspired both theistic and non-theistic paths of realization/enlightenment for the benefit of all Her varied and diverse children. Practice is more important than belief. God doesnt care if souls believe in theism or not, so long as they are practicing spiritual cultivation etc. Enlightenment transcends both theism and non-theism. Thank God! ;-)
