Here is a home you would not expect to see in a small town in rural Wisonsin. Richland Center has many well preserved buildings that represent a wide variety of architectural styles. Of course we are unique since Frank Lloyd Wright was born here and we have the wonderful A.D. German Warehouse for you to visit..e, take a look. The Barrett-Tuxford House, 824 Wright Way, 1987. Designed by renowned architect Arthur Dyson, this house pays homage to the art and architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s tucked away on a steep, heavily wooded lot in Richland Center, birthplace of Frank Lloyd Wright. Dyson cleverly adds his own touch to Wright-like design features such as the wood lantern that hangs emanating light into the living space and in a corner window in the bedroom that looks as though it’s holding up the roof framing. Dyson has won numerous design awards, lectured at major universities and has had examples of his work displayed throughout the world. Bruce Barrett and Elaine Tuxford chose him to design their avant-garde home tucked away in the woods in Richland Center. This home, through its architect and owners, has connections to Frank Lloyd Wright. Bruce Barrett, in fact, studied architecture at Taliesin in the 1940s. At that time, the Usonian concepts were being utilized in creating cost-efficient houses that blended with their natural surroundings. The house has curved walls and a curved roof matched with curved exterior beams laminated at the job site. It faces south and the large expanse of glass helps keep the living space comfotably warm. The home is fitted with a radiant heat system built into the tile floor. The 1,250 square foot interior space is divided into a central living area with kitchen and bedroom separated by a bathroom, flanked by a large native stone fireplace. Two large non-load bearing beams reach out from the living space, through the southern facing bank of windows, reaching out into the patio space. Bruce and Edith are quoted as saying the beams, like outstretched arms, “are symbols of man’s reach out into space.” Many people know Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland Center and designed the A.D. German Warehouse. What is not widely known are the other ties to Wright such as the meticuolously maintained Barrett-Tuxford House. (All photos courtesy of Will Green)
