Here is a little photo report for Kathryn Bridwell Briner on her birthday: My 88-year-old mother and I monitor the streams in our area for the spawning of anadromous fish ... as volunteers for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. In addition, the land entrusted to our care, on the shore of the Potomac River, is the site of a Native American community. It contains a Native American fish weir that serves a dual purpose on the concept of not taking anything without first giving. Not only can it be used for catching fish, it also serves as a spawning grounds. The little fish need protection to survive. These alluvial rocks extend far enough into the river to offer protective nooks and crannies to the small fry during the entire year except in the middle of winter when so-called BLOWOUT conditions occur. By the middle of winter, the small fry will have grown and swum out to sea. Unfortunately, there are some people who pollute the river in truly hideous ways like dumping old tires into it. As can be seen in one of the pictures taken during a BLOWOUT, and in comparison to the hideous tires, some of the alluvial rocks are quite big. Putting them where they are would be an incredible lot of very hard work. It is possible to date this fish weir to a time before the first steamboat began to cause a wake and erode the shoreline, but that is a separate story.
