Here is a little thought which often makes an appearance at my lectures/hands on training course! Q: What action should I employ when using rotary instrumentation? A: Most rotary instrumentation techniques employ a brushing action which is away from the curvature of the root canal. This brushing action ensures movement the canal away from the danger zone (furcation) but also increases the taper of the preparation above and beyond the size of the instrument. This is a desirable feature when there is a significant jump in the system such as in the case of ProTaper NEXT (X1)17 04 to 25 06 (X2). I personally believe that when using this system the amount of brushing with subsequent files should decrease as you approach the finishing file size. The reason is that as you move up in file sizes the jumps between tapers and sizes become smaller and therefore less creation of space is required and you are NOT looking to over taper the prep wider than the chosen finishing file taper. So on the last file an up-down (gliding) action should be employed. Also use this gliding action with path files for the same reason, as well as the fact that their lack of bulk means they will not widen the canal any more if you brush with them.
