Here is a photo that I took of the last ever through revenue earning train from Bedford to Hitchin. Birmingham Railway and Carriage and Wagon built Sulzer type 2 (later class 26 I think) D5380 sits at Bedford Goods yard, near Ouse Bridge Signal box. (I wish I could remember the name of the signal box between Ouse Bridge and Bedford St Johns No 1 - just below Britannia Rd bridge!) Bedford branch of the LCGB hired a second brake van for its members to take the nostalgic trip - the train 9T92 was a sweeper clearing all wagons along the line and leaving them at Hitchin, as well as taking a handful of wagons from Bedford. It is also a good photo of the Bedford Goods shed, an 08 diesel electric 0-6-0 shunter alongside, and Ford end Rd bridge in the background. The return trip to Bedford was just the loco and two guards vans - quite poignant - I was also on the last passenger train propelled by steam loco 84005 - I think there were 8 of us on the footplate at one stage - not a Hi vis vest, nor an O H & S bloke or blokette in sight!
