Here is a question I wrestle with. How can charity, whether in the form on private charity or the government taking money from Person A and giving it to Person B, distinguish between the deserving and the undeserving? Two examples of which Charlie has personal knowledge: John has a minimum wage job, has severe periodontal disease and a tooth that needs to be pulled, and all he had for lunch was white rice and soy sauce. Susan was born with 20/200 vision that cannot be fixed, is morbidly obese, eats sugary sodas and potato chips for lunch, and rides her bike or walks to her minimum wage job. OK, heres the kicker. John said he is going to take todays paycheck and buy a $400 jacket. Charlie said, but you could get a nice jacket at Goodwill for $5. John replied, but this one is really good quality. You cannot make people make good choices, no matter how much of somebody elses money you give them. So far Susan seems deserving. But how do you really KNOW?
