Here is a recap of one of the important items on the agenda at the November 06, 2013 ORVAWG Meeting President Don Helsel attended in Lansing The ORV Advisory Work Group discussed Designated Route/Trail Identifier Signs because the ORV program has none at this time. President Don Helsel supported a motion to: Endorse the concept of placing signage along designated trails to identify the trail; to use letters only as the identifying code; to have them black on white on a square sitting placard; to allow only use on designated trails; to establish a graduated grid system for uniform and contiguous pattern from east to west, and north to south in the UP ; to protect the integrity of the trail system away from any connecting routes, especially those traversing through local municipalities/government areas; that it be a pilot program in the Western UP with a one to two year sunset to be reviewed if problematic; to assure the sign would not be placed on top of or included as part of the current MDNR markers; and, that the UP ORVAWG members form the committee to outline this with Ron Yesney and Rob Katona of the MDNR and bring back a formal plan for the March 2014 meeting. MI-TRALE has been working on the trail identifier standards for over 5 years with MDNR and other organizations. It will be a benefit to finalize this standard and move forward. There will be several subcommittee meetings on this project in the next few months. If you have any comments, please post them here.
