Here is a reply I received from the IDOT concerning the condition - TopicsExpress

Here is a reply I received from the IDOT concerning the condition of hwy 6. Thank you for the information. I certainly understand your concerns. I hope you would give me a chance to explain what is being done to improve the quality of this section of US 6. This section was originally built in 1930. The road/highway was old and narrow. We did widen the road and resurfaced it in 1984 which is almost 30 years ago. Also, since the highway was built too long ago, the design criteria were different. Thus, in order to improve this highway, we are adding subdrains to improve the service life and adding paved shoulders to provide better safety. One of the steps before the overlay is recycling the old pavement to remove the cracks/bumps. Unfortunately, when this is being done, we actually lower the stability of the highway. Also, due to the limited width, we have to push the traffic out farther on the shoulder to have room for construction. The shoulder, nevertheless, is NOT strong enough to handle traffic during the interim. As a result, we are seeing what you are concerning with. I have made it clear to the contractor at the very beginning that we would need to maintain/repair the highway during construction. What you have seen is not the final product yet. As the matter of fact, at this specific location, we have not placed any asphalt on it yet. Contractor is working on the first lift of the two lifts on between Hilton Creek and Bear Creek. Contractor will continue working on other locations. Once both lifts of the asphalt are placed, the quality of the highway should be significantly improved. Again, I thank you for the information. I hope my explanation is adequate and hopefully the highway will soon be much better. If I can provide anything further, please do not hesitate to let me know.
