Here is a simple idea, it is not a race if you can convert to it. Islam is not a race, it is a religion and deserves no more respect than any other ideology. People infected with Islam, or Christianity, or Hinduism for that matter, are not capable of rational thinking and criticism of their [god/s?] virus. Hence, the tendency to respond as if they are being persecuted whenever someone questions their delusions. Let me get it straight; I was pleasantly surprised by how civilized the discussion was. I am use to hearing disrespectful tones/threats of believers. We atheists are not used to being treated with respect. Many times we are vilified before we even open our mouths. I would like to be clear that there are millions of people leaving religions all over the world from Islam, Christianity, Mormonism, Hinduism, Catholicism, Scientology, 7th Day Adventist, Jehovahs Witness. The social penalty for leaving all of these religions can be horrendous. They are often treated like traitors and lose spouses, children, parents, and life long friends simply because they decided they did not believe the dogma of their religion - one they were often born into and had not real choice in joining. Most were indoctrinated, baptized, initiated long before they had any knowledge that there were other religions or no religion and that they had a choice. For many of these people, going into another religion is simply not an option. They dont want to go from Mormon to Baptist, Hinduism to Islam, they want out entirely, and the seek a community at the same time. We are exists to help them deal with the issues of leaving and with reconnecting. For some, they leave fundamentalist religions or cults and seek a more liberal religion. We are happy to give them those contacts and resources as well, though that is not a very large portion of our respondents. When a community; becomes too oppressive or the doctrines no longer make sense. The reasonable thing to do is seek another community and rationality. That is what *atheists* helps people do. Thank you!
