Here is a story about my first day in Pisky and how I learned - TopicsExpress

Here is a story about my first day in Pisky and how I learned about a tiny little kitten named Bublik (translated Cookie/bagel). A high wooden fence blocks the house on the left, its been shredded by shrapnel that took out small and large pieces of wood. As we open the fence door we see a little garden stuffed with military vehicles, bullet proof vests, rocket and grenade launchers and boxes filled with ammunition. Walking down the path we enter the house, ending almost immediately in a pitch black dark room. A small streak of light appears on the floor while slowly the sound of men laughing becomes louder. A guy tells us to follow him towards the streak of light and he opens the door and we walk into a shady and messy small room. The windows have been taped shut with plastic isolation, in the corner to the right a big stove boils water for tea drinking and what more. About 10 armed soldiers are spread out in this tiny room most of them sitting, some standing, as they welcome me with words in Russian. I make my round of giving out hands and greeting them with a simple ‘hello, i’m Tom’, after introducing myself to the soldier I sit down behind a small table and observe. In a very dark corner to the left there is a man sitting, gently whispering words to a young kitten that climbs up and down his shoulder. ‘This cat is named Bublik’, my interpreter tells me and she goes on ‘A bublik is a small cookie, a round cookie with a hole in the middle.’,’like a donut?’ I ask. ‘No, no, it is really a hard cookie with a hole in the middle, like a bagel!’ she smiles. The next three days I found out that this Bublik kitten is the one that keeps up the peace and makes the war a little bit more bearable for anyone. Even the biggest soldier, just coming back from the frontline, softens up as little cute Bublik sits infant of their feet and making high pitched meowing sounds up. I realized that, for them, this tiny Bublik kitty is somewhat like a rock of sanity in a big sea of shit. And for a few days Bublik also became mine. -The Unknown Photographer
