Here is a teaser of what is to come! The north wind cut through Cassie as she carefully made her way down the side of the slippery mountain. She had no idea that her life would be in such peril when her husband Virgil had talked her into heading out west to look for gold. The year was 1850 and gold fever had affected a lot of people back east and down south who thought they could travel west and strike it rich. Virgil and Cassie had known each other since they were babies when their mamas use to put them in a wash tub together at bath time. They were the same age, give or take a month, and grew up together in a small town right outside of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. They had spent their entire lives with each other so it was no surprise to anyone when they reached a certain age that they married. Virgil was a medium built fellow with light brown hair and an infectious smile that could turn a female head at the sight of it. Cassie was small in stature with long brown hair and the brightest blue eyes that Virgil had ever seen. They had both just seen their nineteenth birthday a few months earlier. The two of them wed when they were sixteen but most folks married around that age in their neck of the woods and some girls as early as twelve or thirteen. Virgil had decided that he was not going to kill himself in the cotton fields or coal mines back home. They had no children yet but they wanted a large family. Virgil thought if they could go out west and find their fortune at an early age then they would be set for life and they could afford to have all of the babies that they wanted. Cassie was up for anything new that her husband wanted to try. She had always been a little more of a tomboy than her sister’s maybe because she had always played with Virgil when she was young.
