Here is a template email if you wanted to you use it. A bit wordy but it gets our points across. Obviously feel free to put what ever you want but keep it clean please! Dear Cllr I am writing to you with regard to forthcoming vote on the future of Clifton and Lambert Street Nurseries. I realise this is just one of many difficult decisions you are making at the cabinet meeting on the 23rd but I am asking you to consider the matter and the effects of the decision very carefully. The nurseries of both Clifton and Lambert provide a hugely valuable resource to the people of Hull. The facilities and staff are fantastic and far superior to most private nurseries. There have been many reports showing the proven link between higher educated staff at early years and positive educational outcomes throughout their school careers. I believe closing the nurseries or the loss of 0-3 and wrap around care provision shows a lack of foresight by the council. Not only has there been a birth spike in the recent years but also the plan to roll out the free 15 hours to 2 year olds is soon to be put into place. I believe the nurseries would be able to thrive given the right management and stimulus. I return to the fact that the initial reason for closure was due to low numbers yet the common perception amongst the community was that they were so full you had to go on a waiting list. During the consultation period we saw no evidence of any efforts put into recruitment of children. With regards to 0-3 and wrap around care I think loosing these will lead to a self fulfilling prophecy of closure for the nurseries. Working parents rely on these facilities and without them they would most likely have to consider sending their child to more inferior nurseries where the emphasis is on profit not on care and education. I also wish to specifically ask you consider the suggested timing of the closure of the nurseries were they to go with the recommended dates. Closure in April will leave an entire term uncatered for, forcing children to either go without or have to leave at Christmas. Allowing a July closure would mean many children could see out their nursery time at their much loved nurseries without disruption and upset. Closing them in line with the financial year instead of the academic year show no respect, sympathy or consideration for the children who are currently placed at the nurseries. There is a reason Clifton and Lambert street nursery schools have been so highly regarded for so long. They offer quality care focused on education and development and support not on profit. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you will take these thoughts with you to the meeting. Kind regards
