Here is an awesome example of granular sound design. The audio was created by a very small recording of glassware that was sliced into into very small snippets of sound (probably at the most, a 1/64th note equivalent) and re-arranged into mathematical patterns such as FFTs. the distance between each snippet of sound is what determines the overall sound.
