Here is information based on the psychology of why Directioners react to us in the manor they do. Our brains play pre-historic mental mind games which all humans are born with. We are a social species and we are designed to work together in groups, one of the things that goes alongside group coherence is some sense of difference from other groups, which may be translated into disliking, even aggression. The technical names for these groups are in-groups and out-groups. Humans can place themselves into a group within minutes. Research suggests that strong psychological allegiances can form over very trivial matters like whether One Direction or The Beatles is best, or whether pop is better than rock. Our tendencies to form these gangs can have unwanted side effects, our minds end up twisting the way we hear information so that the group we belong to seems superior. Anyone with a human brain is vulnerable to this odd tribal behaviour, no matter how unimportant the thing youre siding with really is. This happens because in the past, this behaviour could have kept you alive. Pre-historic humans were pretty useless and therefore to survive the odds, they had to stick together as a group. To make that team spirit happen, their brain emphasised the positive aspects of their own tribe whilst seeing the worst in other groups. This psychology doesnt tell the whole story of why were so passionate about different opinions, but grasping how our caveman minds influence our actions does help us understand why we get so would up. We live in a mind blowing age, but our daft old ape brains are still playing catch-up and we should be wary of letting these once useful mental oddities get the better of us. Hope you found this interesting. -Michael
