Here is league week 2 update from Lynda Jonhson: Dear All Our Bundes League teams took to the courts at Ellis Park for the second tie of the league and the Mens A notched up another impressive win of 7 – 2, this time against Bryanston. Captain Pierre reports that Uys and Pat beat their opponents so badly that the one guy broke three rackets in the match. A spectator was most impressed by the way in which Patrick managed to dodge a ball hit by an opponent that probably would have killed any of us and says that this should go down in history as the “duck of the league”. The Ladies A beat Fairland 4 – 2 in matches (8 – 6 in sets), winning the #3 and 4 singles in tiebreakers in the third. It was a very close match and, if they had lost one more match, they would have lost the tie on sets. Shaylin’s opponent actually thought she had won when she reached 7 – 4 in the third set tie-break and walked to the net to shake hands. Fortunately, a super tie-break had to be played – Shaylin kept her nerve and did not lose another point! The Ladies B side unfortunately lost to Old Eds 13/4. There were close matches but only Joc managed to win both her singles and doubles. She is proving to be a worthy anchor in the team, being the only one to win both singles matches thus far! The Ladies C team beat Boskruin C by 62 games to 42 and the Ladies E team beat Wanderers A by 35 games to 31. Both teams seem to be on a winning streak! The Ladies D team got a hiding from Bedfordview A, losing by 49 games to 17 and recording what Wendy described as a bicycle in the one match! The Mens B team lost a close match to Wanderers A, going down 5 – 4. BJ van Rensburg (long time winner of the Marks Park Open Tournament) was probably the deciding factor in this tie. The Mens C team beat Bryanston C by 15 games and remain undefeated at this stage. The Mens D team lost to Glenvista A and the Mens E side lost to Glenhazel A by exactly the same margin of 69 – 96. The Mens F team won by 13 games against Rivonia E. Chris made sure that Captain Cyril had the paramedics on speed dial but he made it through the match and a great time was had by all! My thanks to all the reserves that were pulled into action this weekend, allowing us to field all the teams successfully. Sorry to wake you up on Sunday morning, Rainer but thanks for helping us out of a tight spot at the last minute! If you have some free time, please pop along to Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon. I am sure that our Bundes League teams would appreciate your support in their efforts to bring the titles (Mens and Ladies) back to the ‘right’ club.
