Here is our history. Military With PTSD was started by Shawn J. Gourley in Aug. 2010 as a place to launch her free mini book Being A Military Spouse: Stand By Your Soldier Shawn wanted to help spouses prepare for when the soldiers came home and give them a understanding of what could really happen. The page name was actually called Being A Military Spouse Living with PTSD at first. Within 2 weeks Shawn realized only having spouses here was not working because without hearing the veterans side no one was learning anything so she quickly started asking veterans to come participate on the page. The page members collectively started tossing around ideas for a new page name since we had vets here now also. Much debate on do we call it families with PTSD, Miltiary families with PTSD but the veterans feared other vets would see the name and think it is only for spouses so they thought it was best to name it what we focused on, Military with PTSD. We put all the different names to a vote and Military with PTSD was decided on by 4, 300 veterans and caregivers. They also renamed the book to The War At Home. the exact same process as the page name. As the page grew it has turned into a support group for everyone who is affected by PTSD, so in 2012 when we decided to do more than just a Facebook page and book we registered the business Military with PTSD because that is how we were known from the page and because the veterans and spouses named it. We also decided at that time to stay with the concept of keeping everyone together so veterans and families could see it from both sides and learn together.
