Here is the Capitol Times article about our team from June 10, 1975. They spelled Lauras name wrong, but otherwise a good article. I remember how the city said girls couldnt play. This was in first year midgets, the first year of pitched ball. Dad registered the team and the city didnt say anything. Then we showed up for a game against Mcky-Ellis (a 3rd year team that had Tim Gaskell and Steve Namio and others on it). The umpire was a young man named Tom. He said that he had to forfeit the game if the girls played. Dad said then we forfeit. We knew we would lose to Mcky-Ellis since we were two years younger and they were so good...but their coach and Dad agreed to play a scrimmage. Tom agreed to ump the game. I think realized he could ump the game, turn in the scorecard and then force the city recreation department to forfeit the game. We played. Mcky-Ellis beat us 21-1 (we were so happy to score a run!) and Tom turned in the scorecard. The city backed down and we played the rest of the summer without any drama. At least that is the 11-year old me memory of it. Im sure that Dad had meetings and threatened lawsuits that we never knew about. I do remember Dad saying he met with Dave Kelliher, and he was philosophical about it...he said to my Dad...the world is changing. When was the last time you had a kid ask for extra baseball practice? Dad said - yesterday morning. Because Ned Liebl, Jon Voichick, Todd Myers and I asked Dad to take us down to Hoyt Park to hit us fly balls. Years later my Dad and I were driving to the WIBA studio in Fitchburg so he could drop off some tapes, and we got pulled over by a Fitchburg police officer. He came up to the window and said do you know who I am? Dad said no - I said...sure I do, youre Tom the umpire! He smiled and said he remembered that game.
