Here is the Events List with Descriptions for Next Weeks Aboriginal Awareness Week! Aboriginal Awareness Week 2014, hosted by the First Nations Student Association with support from the Native Centre (ucalgary.ca/nativecentre), is an opportunity for the university community to celebrate and learn about Aboriginal culture. The week includes cultural presentations, a community feast, storytelling and craft workshops. All events are open to the public except the Grandmother’s Tea Ceremony on Tuesday, March 18, which is a women’s only event. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Monday, March 17 Opening Ceremonies 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.Native Centre - Red Lodge, MSC 392 Join us for an opening prayer and a smudge circle. Please dress conservatively. Finding Cultural Parallels Leads to Creating Ethical Spaces – Indigenous Research Seminar 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Escalus Room, MacEwan Conference and Event Centre Hon. Dr. Reg Crowshoe will be facilitating a presentation on how finding cultural parallels can create ethical spaces and promote the building of meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, communities and industries. Tuesday, March 18 Grandmother’s Tea Ceremony 12 noon - 2 p.m.Native Centre - Red Lodge, MSC 392 This women’s only event features a sharing circle, songs and tea shared with the grandmothers to create a network of support for women in the community. We ask that those attending dress conservatively and a skirt must be worn (skirts will be provided). Light snacks and Refreshments provided. Regalia Workshop 2:30 – 4 pm University of Calgary student, Rudy Simon hosts a regalia making workshop. All skill levels are welcome. All supplies and refreshments included. Feather Earring Workshop 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.Native Centre - Red Lodge, MSC 392 For those wanting to learn how to make a pair of feather earrings, Jessee Wise, a University of Calgary student, will host a workshop. All supplies and refreshments included. Engaging New Ideas in Education - Hosted by the Werklund School of Education 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.Education Classroom Block 179 In this presentation, Werklund School of Education assistant professor Gregory Lowan-Trudeau will share the findings of a recent pilot study that explored the experiences of newcomers to Canada with formal and informal learning of indigenous ecological knowledge. Questions guiding this inquiry include: How do students new to Canada perceive indigenous ecological knowledge and philosophies? Also, how might science and environmental educators better respond to such culturally complex educational contexts? Bannock & Indian Tacos will be on sale midday in the Native Centre. Thursday, March 20 Storytelling 9:30 a.m – 11 a.mNative Centre - Red Lodge, MSC 392 Adrian Wolfleg, interpreter at the Glenbow Museum, will share traditional stories. Light snacks and Refreshments provided. Beading 101 Workshop 11 a.m. – 12 noonNative Centre - Red Lodge, MSC 392 Sandra ManyFeathers shares the art of beadwork in this beginner’s workshop. Supplies and refreshments provided. Medicine Wheel Teachings Hosted by the Native Centre & the SU Wellness Centre 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.The Loft, MSC The Native Centre and the SU Wellness Centre will be hosting cultural advisor Casey Eaglespeaker in an interactive session regarding traditional teachings of the Aboriginal medicine wheel. Eaglespeaker will talk about how the mind, mental, physical, and emotional well-being can be integrated in our everyday practices to support Aboriginal students and each other.
