Here is the bottom line: politicians have always raised money to advertise to try to buy votes. There is only so much media to buy - throwing billions at it? Raises rates. Maybe these billionaires will find it more efficient to simply directly bribe politicians in office vs trying to elect their chosen ones. At the same time - WE control who buys our votes, whose ads we believe, whose agenda we support. Educated voters do not get fooled and bought. The danger is uneducated voters - and we have a shitload of people who do not pay any attention to politics - who do not understand the issues, who fall for nice sounding Orwellian language like Right to Work. If we all joined our elected reps and our favored candidates email lists, they would not have to raise so much money for TV ads - they would know we were already paying attention. How many people actually bother to do that?
