Here is the latest report from Patrick Gallaher, executive director of Catholic Charities of Arkansas, on efforts to assist those affected by the April 27 tornado in Mayflower and Vilonia: “First responders continue to assist tornado survivors in Mayflower and Vilonia. The search and rescue phase is complete and the damage assessment phase has begun. The generosity of those outside of the area is overwhelming. There is no storage left for relief items delivered creating a logistic clog. It is expected that new collection points will be designated within 24 hours so that donations may once again be accepted. Reports indicate that the immediate need of survivors is being met. St. Joseph Church in Conway is an American Red Cross shelter, but has experienced little traffic. Survivors have found shelter closer to their destroyed homes or have found other places to stay with friends or relatives. The St. Joseph’s staff is addressing the needs of parishioners affected with help from Catholic Charities of Arkansas. Catholic Charities continues to coordinate with groups to provide support during the clean-up phase soon to begin, and is gathering case managers for the rebuilding effort that will come in the months ahead. Offers of assistance are arriving from groups and individuals from within Arkansas and out of the state. The long-term relief effort will take months as we assist people in obtaining replacement housing, furniture, clothing and counseling. As needs crystallize, we shall seek help from among our parishes.”
