Here is the story...In from the DC area...flying in just for this fishery...two cousins didnt fully know what they were in for. They have caught tuna before...trolling tuna in NC....this is a bit different.... we brought out the spinning gear and surface lures....Ive been using the oldies...back to basics... I grew up throwing Rebels at bluefish...well, those lures advanced to the Maguroni....its a beefed up swimbait.. OTI makes them. Great stuff. I always loved them because I can put them in most peoples hands and know that theyll work. I like taking the trebles off and using an assist hook (on the belly wire)...Today, I put a single hook on the tail and a treble on the belly....thankfully! The fish was hooked by the single tail hook and it almost bent out because of the pressure of the fishs nose... Long story....Richie had an almost immediate hookup on the second or third blitzing school of tuna.. the winds were cranking and we were in solid 4 seas. Not fun boat maneuvering conditions. No problem.. it didnt feel that big. But then it shook like hell and we realized that it was tail wrapped... only for a while..then it almost spooled us! We had to chase it to get line back.. One really good run, then we were back to vertical...On an 86 long rod the vertical battle is where you pay the price. Tough getting leverage on the fish. But we persisted...and passed the rod a lot. The Cush-It saved our nuts. Painful without it. Funniest thing: once it was tail wrapped after about 1 hr, 15 minutes, we hauled it in...all three of us...tail first and gaff in head...came over ok, but then we all slipped. I fell on Tony. He fell on Richie. And the tuna fell on me (all three of us) and pinned us to the deck. Funny as hell. We had to slide out from under the tuna! I am running trips until the tuna disappear. Next Monday is my next open boat...Later next week I have room as well for private or open boats...
