Here is the story on how Rashelles car got wrecked. A Pierre man faces six charges after leading law enforcement on a Saturday morning chase that ended in property damage. Police Captain Elton Blemaster says at about 7:20 a.m. Saturday, an officer observed a black Dodge pickup traveling west on Dakota Avenue. The officer tried to stop the vehicle after it started traveling the wrong way on the one-way approach off the Missouri River Bridge near the Pierre Chamber of Commerce building. Blemaster says when the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver, Toriano Jones, turned east on Sioux Avenue and headed back into Pierre. The pickup turned south at Poplar Avenue, went east on Dakota Avenue and then turned north again on Henry Street. Blemaster says the pursuit at that time reached speeds of 45 miles an hour. Jones, Blemaster says, did not stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Henry Street and Sioux Avenue. The vehicle turned east again on Sioux Avenue, turned left at Central Avenue and headed north. Blemaster says speeds during that part of the chase reached 55 miles an hour. The vehicle kept going north several blocks and eventually turned at Prospect Avenue. On that street, near the intersection, Jones ran the vehicle over the curb and into a retaining wall. Jones then tried to flee on foot, but was quickly captured by officers of the Pierre Police Department and Stanley County’s Sheriff’s Office. Blemaster says the collision virtually destroyed the retaining wall and did considerable damage to the pickup. A parked vehicle also was damaged by debris from the collapse of the retaining wall. Jones was charged with Theft of a Motor Vehicle Over $1,000, Aggravated Eluding, DUI First Offense, Driving Without Valid License or Permit, Expired License Plates and Stop Sign Violation. There is no damage estimate for the vehicles or the wall. Blemaster says the pickup Jones was driving was reported stolen from the 900 block of North Euclid Avenue. The pickup had to be towed from the scene. Two people were taken to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital following the incident. A Pierre police officer was treated for a knee injury and then released. Jones was treated for minor injuries, released and then taken to the Hughes County Jail. Agencies responding to the incident were Pierre Police, Stanley County Sheriff’s Office and state Highway Patrol.
