Here is what I sent to them. You too can comment to: feedback@suntimes To Whom It May Concern, As a transgender minister who is about to move to Illinois, I found this article offensive, uninformed, and highly biased. Kevin Williamson, who I presume is a cisgender man, does not have enough information to be able to speak capably on the lives of transgender people. The core of any faith or ethical philosophy is to develop a capacity to be in healthy, transformative, and compassionate relationship with the other- that person so different from ourselves that we grow uncomfortable and judgmental in their presence- in real time or virtually. This article fails to respect the lives of everyday people in Chicago, Illinois, the U.S., and the world. Efforts to educate cisgender (people who identify as the same gender assigned at birth) are difficult and uncomfortable for EVERYONE involved. Still, learning to be with each other in understanding is a moral imperative to healing a broken world. Before publishing an article like Mr. Williamsons, I encourage you to ask whether it is actually newsworthy or income worthy. All this article seems to do is raise debate for the benefit of income rather than for the benefit of all. And as to Mr. Williamson, please take some time to consider where your discomfort comes from and what it might mean to actually be in relationship with transgender people before forming an opinion.
