Here is where the action will be starting on Monday, by the Brewer Public Works Department, as they begin the demolition of the old State Street School. All the contamination, has been removed, and it has been very expensive at that. I went to school here back in the early 50s...and the teacher, I remember the most was Marion Allen. She was wonderful, and lived right on the corner diagonally across from the high school at the time. A large apartment building will be replacing this building. Private . Here is the State Street school in after its prime time. This was built in 1948 and was designed to accommodate a normal enrollment of 250. Architect Alonso J. Harriman and general contractor T.W. Cunningham added the semicircular glass wing for a kindergarten classroom, including its own entrance and exit. The enrollment had ballooned to more than 400 by the late 1950s, when graphic artist Tom Kane included this sketch of what was then a grad school for kindergarten through seventh grade in this portfolio of local landmarks.
