Here is your review from Friday night!!!! ENJOY!!! and thank you Tony for all your kindness!!! The Little Mermaid JR. Reviewed by Tony Annicone Academy Players of RIs current show is The Little Mermaid, Jr.. It is based on the Danish fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson as well as on the 1989 Disney movie The Little Mermaid. It tells the story of a beautiful mermaid who dreams about becoming human. With her best fish friend Flounder, Ariel goes to the surface of the ocean to visit Scuttle, the seagull. She ignores the warnings of her father King Triton and his adviser Sebastian that contact between merpeople and humans is forbidden. One night Ariel, Flounder and an unwilling Sebastian travel to the surface to see Prince Erics ship. She saves the princes life and immediately falls in love with him. Ariel desperately wants to become human. Her aunt Ursula, the sea witch sends an evil pair of eels, Flotsam and Jetsam to convince Ariel to visit her aunt so she can help Ariel be with Eric. If Ariel fails to kiss Eric in three days, she will belong to Ursula forever. Will true love win out against all obstacles? The stage adaptation opened on Broadway in January, 2008. Director Rita Maron picks the best performers to fill these roles while music director Raechel Robidoux taught them the pretty musical numbers and Rita also as choreographer supplied the inventive dance numbers. They create a fun filled family style entertainment which audiences of all ages can savor and enjoy. Leading this cast is Lauren Vine as the beautiful Ariel. She captures this vibrant character wonderfully. Her songs include The World Above, Human Stuff with Scuttle, Part of your World and Poor Unfortunate Souls with Ursula. Lauren makes Ariel a character the audience can root for. Prince Eric is well played by Jacob Kaufman. He sings Fathoms Below, Her Voice and Part of Your World finale. Lauren and Jacob play this couple wonderfully and the romantic embrace is the cherry on top of the sundae at the end of the show. The supporting cast is topnotch, too. The pilot of the ship is Jamie Schmidt whose strong voice opens Fathoms Below song. King Triton is played by Adam Pedro who shows the strength of the king with his strong line delivery while scolding Ariel and later when he defends her against Ursula. His six daughters sing and dance up a storm in Shes in Love with Flounder. The hilarious Sebastian is excellently played by Megan Mahoney. Her show stopping number is Under the Sea and her second number is Kiss the Girl where she and the sea creatures urge Eric to kiss Ariel. This number sounds like Benjamin Calypso from Joseph. Flounder is well played by Tori Richard. She sings a 1950s style song called Shes in Love which turns into a big dance number with the sisters. Jean-Michael Pion is hilarious as Scuttle, the seagull who sings Human Stuff describing human things wrongly like saying a fork is a comb. He and the chorus do a fabulous dance to it. The villains of the show are excellently played by Meryn Flynn as Ursula, the seawitch and Marissa Liotta and Mackenzie Maron as Flotsam and Jetsam, her henchmen. Meryns show stopping number with them is called Poor Unfortunate Souls where she describes what will happen to Ariel. It sounds like Reviewing the Situation from Oliver. The chef is well played by Kyle Coutre who gets to sing Les Poissons which is reminiscent of Be Our Guest. This huge cast delivers the goods in this fun filled musical treat for family members of all ages. For every performance they donate money to a service project. So be sure to catch The Little Mermaid, Jr and observe talented performers of all ages entertain and enthrall you completely with their rendition of this musical. The Lirttle Mermaid JR.
