Heres a fascinating overview of what was popular on YouTube this year, featuring a range of very-professional-and-polished to completely-unprofessional-and-unpolished content creators in an EXTREMELY-professional-and-polished mashup. I probably watch more YouTube than the average person, but I think I understood less than half of the references. (Granted, I tend to watch the types of things I already know I like rather than whatevers trending.) This gave me the feeling that I was missing something, accompanied by a compulsion to catch up - presumably the desired effect - which mostly went away when the video was over and I thought about it. My desire to KNOW ALL THE THINGS tends to be drowned out pretty quickly by the sheer quantity of things there are to know. If I knew all the YouTube things, I wouldnt care about most of them. The flip side of the amazing quantity and variety of the creative, the contemplative, and the unexpected collected on YouTube is that I will never reach the end of things that DO interest me. As a member of both categories, Im a huge fan of the broad access it gives content creators and audiences to one another.
