Heres a great video of a nesting turtle taken on 7/12 near Shangrila at the 800 block of W Gulf Beach Drive. (Thanks Annie!) Assuming all goes well in terms of the nest not being washed out or scavenged by predators, it should hatch anytime between September 5th and the 15th. (The nests hatch approximately 60 days after being laid.) As of Monday, 7/14, we had 82 nests between Sunset Beach on the East End and the Cut in the Plantation. The State Park reports 37 nests as of yesterday. Unfortunately, weve had one wash out. The theory is that lights left on after dark and personal belongings left on the beach caused a partial false crawl so the nest was laid too close to the water line, instead of higher near the dunes. Please help us protect these natural wonders by removing your items from the beach, filling in holes and turning exterior lights off at dusk and closing drapes/blinds. We thank you!
